Brand Finalizes Charitable Works in the Spirit of Ramadan

STAMFORD, Conn. (October 15, 2014) – As the result of a very successful give back initiative which took place this past July, Saffron Road is thrilled to announce the grant of four salad bars – one for each of the middle schools in Peoria, Illinois school district.

As a part of charitable works to give back during Ramadan, Saffron Road partnered with Whole Kids Foundation to help bring salad bars to underprivileged schools as healthy lunch through the Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools program. For every Saffron Road product purchased during Ramadan at Whole Foods Market, Saffron Road donated 5% (approximately $0.25 per item up to $11,000) to Whole Kids Foundation with the goal to help fund salad bars in impoverished areas of the U.S., especially schools with large percentages of under-represented kids of color.

While there is growing awareness of the health and educational benefits that salad bars provide to kids, many school districts are unable to afford the basic equipment needed to implement this more health conscious approach to providing student lunches. The Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools Program is committed to helping schools make this positive change through delivering the essential supplies and education necessary to establishing salad bars in these less privileged schools and communities.

“We are so excited to bring these salad bars to middle school students in Peoria,” says Adnan Durrani, founder and CEO of Saffron Road. “A big part of our good works and socially responsible mission during Ramadan is the privilege of being able to give back to those in need. Nothing could warm our hearts more than knowing that due to our wonderful partnership with Whole Kids Foundation, together we are able to support healthy choices and nutritional salad bars to the Peoria, Illinois middle school district, whereby we will impact the lives of 1,347 middle schoolers to make healthier food choices. Research tells us that when underrepresented minority children are given healthier meal options, they not only opt in for them, but that this can have a material lasting impact on their lives long term – not just in terms of physical wellness, but also most importantly in terms of overall academic performance. We couldn’t be more enthusiastic about our small gesture here and are very grateful to Whole Kids Foundation for championing this great cause with us.”

“Whole Kids Foundation is honored to partner with Saffron Road to celebrate the spirit of giving,” said Nona Evans, Whole Kids Foundation Executive Director.  “The team at Saffron Road is dedicated to providing high quality food and through this project, students in Peoria will enjoy increased access to fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains! We know that well-nourished kids have the energy and focus to reach their greatest potential!”

Statistics show children consume three times more fruits and vegetables when they have access to a salad bar at school lunch. Additionally, minority children from low-income households have almost 100 percent higher odds of developing deficiencies in mental development due to food insecurity.

Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools launched in 2010 with the mission of donating salad bars to U.S. schools so that every child has daily access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The program was founded by the Chef Ann FoundationNational Fruit and Vegetable AllianceUnited Fresh Produce Association, and Whole Foods Market in support of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Initiative.

The salad bars are expected to be up and running before the end of the 2014 calendar year, providing joy, cheer and good health just before the holidays.
