Lamb Saag Frozen Dinner
Did you know that…
Saag is believed to have originated around 1900 BC as a fine purée of mustard greens simmered in yak’s milk. Originally prepared according to the spiritual and healing practices of the time, referred to as Ayurveda, the ingredients were believed to contain benefits well beyond flavor. Saag has since evolved over generations and now typically features spinach with a finely tuned blend of spices including ginger, turmeric and cumin.

I thought it was great... for a frozen food meal.... enough for one.
So I was very excited to see this variant in my rural Kentucky town. But my excitement soon turned into sheer disappointment! The actual thing looked nothing like the photo on the box.. which isn't that great to begin with. The lamb pieces (2-3) were microscopic and chewy. The saag was not properly cooked and was too watery! I hated the specks of tomatoes swimming in there. As with most of their meals, the rice quantity was really inadequate. Though I have to say the saag quantity was good enough to be had with 1-2 rotis IF the taste was good.. which it wasn't. Really bad product!
The saag sauce tastes good. 3 small chunks of lamb is not enough. I am of Indian heritage and I understand the eagerness to include basmati rice for non-indian eaters to "experience" ethnic food but still the sauce is not even enough to cover the tasteless basmati -- the package says the basmati has ginger and garlic but IT DOES NOT. The basmati is completely tasteless.
