Non-Riders and Pillions

We acknowledge that many of our clients have partners who do not ride. All of our tours have a support vehicle which can accommodate passengers. However, for those clients who are not riding at all (i.e. not even pillion/two-up), we can arrange for a separate car with driver upon request. No need to leave your best mate at home!

Accommodation

To ensure your comfort and a truly ‘African experience’ we use excellent three- to four-star hotels and safari lodges throughout the tour.

Driving Licences and Travel Insurance

Riders must have a valid and unrestricted international rider’s licence and carry an International Driving Permit. Travel insurance is mandatory and, if on a bike at all, must cover riding motorcycles.

The Bikes

On all the Africa tours we use as standard, the BMW F650GS, or for those who prefer (as an optional extra), the 1200GS. These bikes are rented through our ground operator directly from BMW. All are late models which have been impeccably maintained. Unlike many of our other tours (and identical with car hire requirements), each person will be required to sign their own rental agreement and pay a refundable deposit. The bikes are all covered by comprehensive insurance, but any damages resulting from dropping the bike will be at the renter’s expense.

The Roads

The road surface is 100% asphalt (bitumen/ tar seal) in South Africa (Cape Town to border), but 70-90% gravel after crossing the border into Namibia where only 5,000kms of road is sealed, compared to a staggering 37,000kms of gravel. If we deem that the going is too much for the majority of the group, we may be able to re-route onto sealed roads in places or possibly split the group in two – those who want to continue with gravel and those who would prefer sealed (which sadly misses out on some of the spectacular scenery).

Further Information
More detailed information, Trip Notes, suggested packing check-list and maps will be mailed to you after we receive a completed booking form and deposit. If a visa is required (which it is for most non-Commonwealth countries), forms can usually be downloaded from the net (details in Trip Notes).

Please Note:
This is a “best-fit” itinerary. Saffron Road and the tour leader reserves the right to change the route or other details due to amended timetables, weather and road conditions, political expediency and/or on advice from our local ground agent. Also, on a tour such as this, it is not always possible to conform with plans made months in advance. Remember this is an adventure tour, so to enjoy the trip fully we advise a flexible attitude towards the itinerary. Remember, it is often the unexpected and unplanned which turn out to be highlights

…a flexible attitude is crucial.
