Daily Itinerary
15th August ~ 2nd September, 2011Briefing and early start to ride from Ulaanbaatar through the lovely Tuul River Valley towards Unurshireet. Night stop at a camp on the shores of the Tuul River.
Kharkhorin (also known as Harahorin) was the ancient capital city of Khubilai Khan. Visit the monastery surrounded by 108 stupas.
Ride along the Orkhon Valley towards Tsenkher hot springs. With its green rolling hills, abundant wildlife and nomads settlements along the rivers, it is one of the finest valleys in central Mongolia. Arrive in the evening Tsenkher hot springs in time to enjoy a cold beer and hot outdoor bath!
Early start towards Ulzii Soum. After crossing the Tamir River the route continues north towards the Russian border. Camp in Ulzii Soum.
Uraantogoo was formed during volcanic eruption. Here the landscape will change from flat steppe into mountainous landscape.
Most of this route is hard-top road and will pass through the third largest copper mining city in Mongolia. In the evening will arrive in Amarbaysaglan Monastery, which is located in the foothills of the mountains in the beautiful Iven Gol River Valley. The monastery was built by the Manchuko Emperors in 1726. It was sacked and destroyed in 1937 and re-built in the nineties.
Early start to ride towards Altanbulak on the Mongolia-Russia border. Rest and prepare for tomorrow's border crossing into Russia.
Another early start for the border crossing into Russia. Clear immigration and customs and meet our Russian counterparts. Lunch in the little village of Khiakhta before hitting the road again for a 210km ride to Ulaan Udee, the capital city of the Republic of Buriatiya.
Ride along Lake Baikal's eastern shore in the direction of Ust Barguzin, where the bikes are loaded onto a ferry for an overnight sail across Lake Baikal. Sunset and dinner on the boat; arrival in the morning on the island of Olkhon.
Ride the north-western side of the lake, then take ferry across from Olkhon Island to mainland and start our journey on the Northern side of the lake through high mountains and dense Siberian forest on a good paved road to Irkutsk.
An early start riding around the lake on a route voted as one of the most scenic roads in Russia. Riding over 400km running parallel to the largest and deepest fresh water lake in the world will leave unforgettable road memories. Arrival in Sukhoe for a dip in the hot water springs.
Arrive back in Ulaan-Udee in time to take in a few cultural sites including seeing a mummified monk. Opportunity for emailing.
Start heading back to Mongolia. After clearing customs there's an overnight stay in Darkhan, Mongolia's second largest city after Ulaanbaatar.
Early start to get back to UB in time to celebrate and relax before Farewell Party.
